Advancing Maternal Health Outcomes With Preventative Care Solutions

WHO defines maternal health as “the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.” Every woman deserves to have access to information and high-quality maternity care during all these stages.

In 2023, maternal mortality is still unacceptably high, even in Europe, and prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5 years. Preventing deaths and complications from preterm birth starts with a healthy pregnancy and women who received midwife-led continuity of care, provided by professional midwives educated and regulated to international standards, are 16% less likely to lose their baby and 24% less likely to experience preterm birth. There is a need to focus on the mother’s mental health and wellbeing, as in Europe we see a rise in post-natal depression. We need to look at how to support new parents and address self-care with access to the right products and services through insurance providers and public governments.

What can be done?

By addressing inequalities that affect maternal health outcomes, focusing on preventative care solutions that can advance maternal health and securing high-quality antenatal and postnatal care, it is possible to improve survival rates and the health of newborns and mothers around the world. It is possible, it is necessary and it is time to do so.
