The past year (and the first half of 2021) has been tough and has taken a toll on everyone’s mental health. And while everyone coped in a different way, we found that much-needed calm in our busy, sometimes chaotic, schedule by returning to our yoga mats every morning. Pandemic has also taught us to use every single opportunity to celebrate things, big and small. And today happens to be International Yoga Day and we want to celebrate with all of you!

We at Women of Wearables cover different topics in emerging technologies, but it’s no secret that FemTech has been our focus for the last couple of years. Over the years, we collaborated and met founders, innovators, experts who are pushing the frontiers of innovation when it comes to women’s health and their products and services help us lead healthier lives.

We are proud to say that we have given the platform for these conversations to be held, challenges raised, and different stories heard. But, when it comes to women’s health, there are still many areas surrounded by stigma and shame, so our work doesn’t stop there. Our mission is to start the conversation, educate women about their health and options available so that they can make more informed decisions when it comes to our greatest wealth - our health.

For this occasion, we have joined forces with truly WoW companies, Intimina and Melon & Lime, as we wanted to start the conversation about practising yoga while on your period, find out the benefits of it and, last but not least - to celebrate with a big giveaway on our Instagram where you will be able to win some amazing prizes from all three companies.

If you’re still not familiar with Intimina and Melon & Lime, give us the pleasure of introducing them!

INTIMINA is a Swedish brand that offers the first and only range of products dedicated exclusively to all aspects of women’s intimate health. Their mission is to provide a comprehensive collection of products and information for women at every stage of life, from the first menstruation to beyond menopause. Last year they launched a campaign with Pantone Colour Institute to make menstruation more visible and normalize this most normal of bodily functions. The Pantone Colour Institute has created Period—an original shade of red that represents a steady flow during menstruation. You can read more about the campaign here.

This year, with their “The Wonder Girls Guide Book”, they aim to fill up the hole left by inadequate educational programs, shame, and taboos around periods, to strike up the conversation about an entirely normal part of growing up. The book is created for ages eight to twelve and it tells the stories of trials and tribulations strong young women experience because of their changing, growing bodies. We talked to INTIMINA’s Global Brand Manager Danela Zagar about INTIMINA’s mission and vision, you can read the interview on our WoW women blog here.

At Melon & Lime, they take feeling good seriously. Understanding both the connection between the body and mind as well as the effect regular yoga and meditation practices have on finding (and keeping!) that mindful presence, their products represent a visually pleasing, simple and effective invitation to take five for yourself. When they first got the idea for Melon & Lime, they simply wanted to create beautiful yoga mats that would motivate people to practice and stretch. However, it soon became clear that they can do a whole lot more, which is why they created mats that are functional and at the same time inspiring.

With the help of NFC technology, their mats are connected to an app that allows users to find inspiration through a bunch of guided yoga and meditation videos in order to make the most of their time on the mat.

We talked to Melon & Lime’s founders Rebeka Vegelj and Jelena Sangarelo about their entrepreneurial journey, what inspired them to create Melon & Lime, you can read the interview on our WoW Women blog here.

Is practising yoga during your period even safe?

The short answer is - yes, absolutely! Practising yoga during your period can help you relieve some of the symptoms like cramps and bloating, it can help alleviate your back pain, and balance the emotions you’re going through.

However, it’s important to have this in mind before your practice:

  • Meet your body where it is: Take it easy and be gentle with yourself and your body.

  • Move at your own pace: You know your body the best, listen to it carefully and don’t push yourself too hard.

  • Whenever you feel discomfort, return to your child’s pose and just rest.

Throughout the week, we will be sharing interesting content about the benefits of practising yoga during menstruation, you will be able to find out your ideal yoga pose through quiz Intimina and Melon & Lime developed, and get access to Melon & Lime’s gentle hour-long class during the winter of your menstrual cycle—during your bleed time—or whenever you're in need of some nourishing, intuitive, slow movement to come back home to yourself, your inner knowing and the guidance of your cyclical wisdom.
